About a month ago it was announced that JK Rowling would be coming to NYC for her only stop for the American press tour for her new book, The Casual Vacancy. Everyone in attendance (only 1,100 tickets)W would get to go to her speech/presentation as well as get a signed copy of the book, so I’m the most ecstatic person ever, right?

This morning we had our alarm set for 6am to get ready and go to the Lincoln Center to buy tickets at the box office at 10am. Assuming the line would be pretty long for the limited amount of tickets we would be armed with our smart phones to try and get through over the phone or the website.

Then 5am struck and I’m prematurely awoke by a weird scratching noise. I honestly thought someone was trying to break in, but Casey wasn’t waking up, I thought I could be making it up, and knew that Hannah’s room was at the front of the apartment so she’d be killed first and give me a chance to escape. I rolled over and went back to sleep. Ten minutes later Casey wakes me up to reveal a giant rat is wrecking havoc on our kitchen.

An hour of chasing the rat, swatting at it with a broom, calling the landlord, climbing on counters, screaming and jumping as it charges us, it seeks refuge under the stove. We set up guard stations to make sure it doesn’t get away while waiting for the landlord to arrive. One hour he tells us. Over two hours later he appears (the landlord).

At this point it is past 10am, so it’s too late to get ready and go to the Lincoln Center. And the online ticket sells slated for 10am? Yeah, they decided to open them at 10pm last night and sell out within an hour. SO….. after over 100 phone calls to the Box Office, and spending 40 minutes on ‘hold’ while waiting for a representative to answer my call once I got something other than a busy tone….. we got the tickets :)

and the rat is gone.
